Glacier Ravine Grindelwald

The famous glacier ravine in Grindelwald is an impressive masterpiece of nature. Once the ravine was covered by the lower Grindelwald Glacier and due to climate change is now accessible to everyone. The glacier ravine impresses with its unique rock galleries, the river flowing through it and the whole atmosphere.

History

The glacier ravine has become free due to the strong climatic fluctuations in the last centuries. In the past, the entire lower Grindelwald glacier led across the ravine. During the so-called Little Ice Age, around the end of the Middle Ages, the glacier even reached as far as the village of Grindelwald. It extended furthest into Grindelwald in the years 1600 and 1855. Around approximately 1864, the glacier had already retreated so far that the famous pink Eiger marble could be quarried in the canyon.

When the Lower Glacier was still a real glacier. Landlord Peter Inäbnit ran the “Chalet Inäbnit” above the marble quarry with an ice grotto, and the marksmen built a marksmen’s house, shot across the glacier ravine and called themselves “Gletscherschützen”. Experience

Today there are various possibilities to pass the time in the glacier ravine. For example, there is a tunnel that is accessible. Furthermore, the ravine is also used by climbers and sometimes canyon-jumping is possible in summer. There are also various artificial bridges that lead up to one kilometre into the ravine above the flowing melt water. It is a unique experience in any case. When you are at the very back of the ravine, the smooth walls of the ravine rise up to 100 meters into the air.

At the entrance of the glacier ravine there is also a crystal museum with minerals from the region and a small shop. In summer there is a new SpiderNet next to the footbridges, which leads directly over the flowing water.

Tip

Every Friday the ravine is also open in the evening and is additionally illuminated with different colours. A unique experience, which you absolutely must have seen.
