Harder Kulm

The Harder Kulm is Interlaken‘s local mountain and yet it is not really a mountain at all. It is one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Berger Oberland and only the end of the mountain range of the Emmental Alps. As the slogan “Top of Interlaken” says, you can see the whole of Bödeli from the Harder Klum.

Location

The viewpoint can be reached in 8 minutes with the Harderbahn. The valley station is directly at the Interlaken Ost station and accordingly well connected. Newly renovated railway has been running since 5 May 1908 and is already part of the image of Interlaken. In the 8 minutes of travel time, the cable car climbs 1435 meters with a gradient of up to 64%. After arriving at the top station you have to walk about 7 minutes to the actual Harder Kulm. As an alternative to the train, there are also many hiking trails that lead directly up to the Harder. We can only recommend that you inform yourself in advance about the difficulty of the trail. The difficulty of the trails can vary a lot, so one trail is even ideal for tomorrow’s jogging and the other one can only be walked with “real” mountain shoes.

Building

It is not difficult to see that the buildings are all pretty much the same architecturally. They were built at the same time as the railway and are now guns. Despite their young age they are home guns of the municipality of Interlaken.

Hardermannli

According to various stories in the region, it is said that a long time ago a monk met a child from Unterseen while collecting wood in the forest at Harder Kulm. The girl was very interested in the monk, but the monk was not interested in the child. As a result, the monk chased the child along the forest paths until the child jumped over a ledge into the depths due to his heart’s fear. The monk was then turned to stone by the earthly misdeeds of the heavenly judge. The monk better said, the Hardermannli is still cursed to this day and is said to look down on the scene of his crime.
