Lake Thun, one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Switzerland. With its beautiful dark blue colour, the beautiful Bernese Alpine Lake not only inspires the local but also the tourists.

Facts

Lake Thun is about 17.5 km long and 3.5 km wide. Its surface is about 47,85 km2 and the maximum depth is 217 m. It is also the largest lake in a canton. Lake Thun has about 6.5 km3 of water, which is supplied by the flowing river Aare. In addition a very exciting fact. After the Ice Age, a Wendelsee formed where Lake Thun and Lake Bienz lie today. The “Bödeli”, better known as Interlaken, was formed by the deposits of bedload from the mountain streams from the surrounding villages such as Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. In addition to Interlaken, the communities of Matten and Unterseen also find a place on the Bödeli. Another confusing fact, as in other Swiss lakes, was sunk in the lake, in the course of the 20th century several thousand tons of ammunition.

Lake Thun is not only a tourist destination but also a major economic sector for the region. Many people still live from professional fishing today. Every year, around 53,000 kilograms of fish are fished from Lake Thun and sold in the region. One of the most important branches of the economy is also shipping, since 1835 various ships have been operated on Lake Thun. By the way, even today you can still travel across Lake Thun with the paddle steamer Blümlisalp. Nowadays, up to 10 ships sail back and forth on the lake. Tickets are available at BLS. Wines are another well-known branch of the economy. Due to the good climate in the foothills of the Alps, four special wines are produced. White varieties like Müller-Thurgau and Chardonnay, red varieties like Garanoir and Pinot Noir.

To follow

In 2016, archaeologists discovered parts of lake dwellings in Lake Thun. The remains of a Bronze Age village were also found as early as 2015. The discoveries also raise new light about the settlement history of the region. You want to know more about it, write us!

Tips

Since 2011, a panoramic hiking trail has been laid out around Lake Thun with several large suspension bridges. This is highly recommended for longer walks or a long morning jog. Please inform yourself in advance which sections are still under construction so that you can enjoy the round one. Outside in summer the lake gets up to 20 degrees warm, so optimal for swimming, also for beginners the lake is optimal. In winter, however, the lake gets cold up to 2 degrees, so it is better to have a nice brunch in one of the restaurants on the shore. Our tip: The Delta Park in Gwatt.
