Glecksteinhütte

The Glecksteinhütte – The hut that can be reached in 4 hours, with a wonderful view of Grindelwald. The Glecksteinhütte, not by chance the name comes from. If you are lucky you will find out why it is called that. In the 15th century the shepherds used to bring their sheep up to the alpine meadow. Since many animals like salt to lick, you know it for example from cows, the shepherds brought salt with them at most of the ways to the pasture. However, this salt was not like normal road salt but in a form of a stone. As this salt stone has a special name in Switzerland, Gleckstein, the hut was named after the Schweizer Tierleckerli. Even today, animals are brought up to the Gleckstein hut and stay there during the summer.

But not only sheep and animals from the village can be seen at the Glecksteinhütte, also animals from nature like Gemschi and various birds are close enough to touch. If you are lucky, you can also watch ibexes having breakfast in the hut, playing on the terrace of the hut.

The Glecksteinhütte can be recommended very much and is certainly suitable for a good hiker. Especially the beautiful view and the untouched nature are the unique features of the hut and the hiking trail.
