Light Art Festival Grindelwald

An experience, the Light Art Festival in Grindelwald. In October the Light Art Festival Grindelwald takes place annually. Now in October the premiere took place. During 10 days the light installations can be admired in the village in the evening.

National and international light artists* exhibit their works of art in the public space in the center of Grindelwald. Light Art Grindelwald puts the artists* and their works of art in the center of attention, which allows an undisturbed art experience. The public does not pay any entrance fee, can move around freely and explore the light art works on their own. The viewers are no longer just standing in front of a work – but often in the middle of it. And this against the impressive backdrop of the Eiger North Face.

Marvel at the light art in the village.

The Light Art Festival Grindelwald offers a current insight into contemporary artistic creation in the field of light art. The artists* and works of art are selected according to a thematic focus, which is determined anew each year. In experimental and site-specific arrangements, the artists* examine the relationships between people and their surroundings with light as a medium of perception.

Light addresses the connection between work and perception in a special way. Contemporary artists create aesthetic, seemingly empty spaces of light, whose physical perception is an essential part of these works of art. Particularly in the 1960s, the genre, which is now generally referred to as light art, developed extensively with conceptual art and technological advances. Many of the artists* who work with physical light, such as James Turrell, Dan Flavin, Mary Corse and Olafur Eliasson, refer or have referred to perception as a co-creative and co-constituting process of each artwork.

Light Art Festival Grindelwald – The Tour.

The Light Art Tour starts on Bärplatz, from where you can admire the illuminated wall of the former Hotel Regina. Beautiful color combinations are projected onto the hotel wall. The former hotel shines in the most beautiful colors, a true play of colors.

On foot, the tour continues to the Eiger+ – Place, where street signs are displayed in such a way that they shine in different plays of color. You have never seen street signs like this before, because we only know this kind of signs from construction sites on highways and freeways. Ingeniously staged from the peep-box and Instagram-Point.

The next stop is at the Minigolf-Park. Steam clouds are illuminated and the Eiger north face in the background creates a colorful and mystical picture.

Up the village we go to the Sunstar Hotel, where the house wall is illuminated in black and white. Dancing figures, the so called “Light Dancers”, shine and show their mobility. And when it gets too sporty, they pull the curtain. A really beautiful spectacle and projected excellently onto the Sunstar wall.

And on we go to the church of Grindelwald, where a laser show is presented inside the church. Laser circles move through the nave, the church is shown to its best advantage. Outside, a color mosaic is projected on a church window. The play of light inspires with its colors and shapes.

On the opposite side of the street, a color tent is set up, which illuminates a play of light on the wall of the former Hotel Gletscherblick.

A colorful Grindelwald, beautifully presented and sustainable. Light Art Festival Grindelwald, worth a visit in October. We wish you lots of fun and pleasure.
