Old Traditional Fences (Hag)

Old Traditional Fences (Hag) – Handmade and Effective

The artistic fences (Hag) have a long tradition in the Swiss Alps. In the past they were used to separate the country from the pastures. It is easy to see that all fences are made of only one raw material, wood. Wood for the reason that it is available everywhere in the Alps and can be used quickly without much effort. Furthermore, wood is of course one of the best renewable raw materials.

If you are travelling with us in the village of Grindelwald or on hikes, you will certainly come across such artistic alpine fences. Especially in Grindelwald such old traditional fences are still very common.
There is also a fence at the playground in the village, or at the museum you can admire the Schweifelhag.

Schweifelhag

Schweifelhag

Manufacture:

Fir branches that are still slightly damp are made supple by heating them over a fire and are then bundled in rings. They serve as fastening rings for the Schweifelhag, which is made up of long wooden splits

Scharhag

Scharhag

Manufacture:

The Scharhag consists of crosswise pairs of sticks driven into the ground and inclined “Schijen” of up to three metres long split conical boards.

Tip from us:
If you want to see such a beautiful fence in the open nature, then hike to the Bachalpsee on a beautiful day. On the beautiful hiking trail from Bachalpsee to Waldspitz you can admire a traditional Scharhag above Bachläger (see picture above).
