The Mönch

The Mönch, a mountain in the shadow of Eiger and Jungfrau

State

The Mönch lies in the Bernese Alps, also known as the Western Alps, between the Eiger and the Jungrau. Together with the two mountains, the Mönch forms the well-known group of three, also known as the Triumvirate. What not many people know is that the Mönch and the Jungfrau are already on the Valais side, so they no longer belong to the Bernese Oberland.

Ascent

The Mönch can be walked on by anyone who has a bit of a presentiment about mountaineering. Within 2 hours you can climb the mountain of the Jungfraujoch, but you should not underestimate it. First ascent, the monk was made on 15 August 1857 by Christian Almer from Grindelwald, Christiam Kaufmann, Ulrich Kaufmann and Sigismund Porges. A fact to Christian Almer, he also climbed the Eiger first and was considered one of the best mountaineers in his time.

Special features

The Mönch is a good 4107 metres above sea level and is therefore one of the highest mountains in the Bernese Oberland or better said in the central Alps. The advantage of the mountain is that it is quite easy to reach and can be climbed within 2 hours from the Jungfraujoch. With good climbing skills the ascent is no problem, the only thing to consider is the cold on the glacier. But it should not have crevasses, as they are more below the Jungfraujoch, i.e. towards the Eiger. In addition, a stopover in the Mönchsjochhütte is recommended for every ascent, this is on the way towards Mönch. But it is not only a good tip during the ascent, but also for tourists who want to experience something during their stay at the Jungfraujoch. The Mönchsjochhütte is about 30 minutes away from the Jungfraujoch and always has good quality products in its assortment.

Climbing the Mönch is an absolute tip. The view is great and in such a short time you can’t climb 4’000 of them. Further down is the Aletsch Glacier, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also a Swiss Cultural Heritage Site.
