Eiger North Face

One of the most famous mountain walls in the world, the Eiger North Face in Grindelwald. Apart from its popularity, it is also one of the largest walls in the Alps.

First ascent Eiger North Face

In 1938 the first four-man team with Anderl Heckmair, Heinrich Harrer, Ludwig Vörg and Fritz Kasparek succeeded in the first ascent of the north face. Even before that, countless attempts at bribery had been made, but fatal accidents had repeatedly occurred. The first known ascent took place in 1935, but unfortunately both climbers died. Because at that time the National Socialism was still in force, the ascents of the mainly German-Austrian groups are still criticized. Mainly because of the politically adjusted attitude of the climbers at that time.
Since then countless other routes have been added. There are now more than 30 interconnected routes. The routes are also divided into certain difficulty levels, so there are also some very difficult routes with grade ten (X). Top mountaineers like Ueli Steck are now able to climb the Eiger north face in a few hours.

In the past, alpinists needed up to 3 days to climb through. Today the record is 2 hours, 22 minutes and 50 seconds on the Heckmaie route.

Facts about the Eiger North Face

The north face is over 1800 metres high and is located on the Eiger, which is a good 3967 metres above sea level. It is part of the Bernese Alps and belongs to the famous triumvirate of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Because of the many and long routes, the wall is one of the longest and most strenuous. There is also a high risk of rockfall and avalanches. The wall is particularly well known for its dramatic first ascent. And of course also by the railway that leads directly through the Eiger to the Jungfraujoch.
