Wetterhorn

Wetterhorn

The Wetterhorn, Grindelwald’s local mountain on the edge of the village. With its horns it is unique. The mountain is also marked by many stories.

Location

The Wetterhorn lies in the Bernese Alps, also known as the Western Alps, above Grindelwald. In addition, the mountain forms the end of the village and is also Grindelwald’s landmark. In addition, the mountain consists of 3 adjacent peaks. Consisting of the Wetterhorn, the Mittelhorn (at 3704 m the highest peak of the mountain) and the Rosenhorn.

Ascent

The Wetterhorn is accessible for everyone and can be climbed with good climbing skills without any problems. The first ascent took place on 31 August 1844 by Joh. Jan and Melchior Bannholzer. Since then the 3691 m high mountain has been climbed many times. There is also a mountain hut on the mountain, the so-called Glecksteinhütte. Read HERE more about the Glecksteinhütte, in our blog.

Specials

Between 1908 and 1915, Switzerland’s first passenger aerial cableway was operated at the foot of the Wetterhorn. Unfortunately, due to the bankruptcy of the operator, the further expansion and operation of the railway was paused. Unfortunately, no new operator or investor has been found and all transport permits have expired. Due to the ever increasing retreat of the glacier, an aerial cableway from Grindelwald to Wetterhorn Glacier is unimaginable. A tour of the mountain station from the Wetterhorn lift is possible on the way to the Glecksteinhütte. In addition, the old gondolas can still be seen at the Oberer Gletscher bus station.
