Lake Brienz

Brienzersee

Lake Brienz

Lake Brienz, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Bernese Oberland. “Cold but cool” is the setting to be able to swim.

facts

Lake Brienz is about 14 km long and 2.8 km wide. Its surface is about 29.8 km2 and its maximum depth is 260 m. Lake Birenz has about 5.2 km3 of water, which is supplied by the surrounding brooks, also from Grindelwald. Also a very exciting fact. After the Ice Age, a Wendelsee formed where Lake Brienz and Lake Thun lie today. The “Bödeli”, better known as Interlaken, was formed by the deposits of bedload from the mountain streams from the surrounding villages such as Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. In addition to Interlaken, the communities of Matten and Unterseen also find a place on the Bödeli. Another confusing fact, as in other Swiss lakes, was sunk in the lake, in the course of the 20th century several thousand tons of ammunition.

In the lake there is a small island called Schnäggeninseli (snail island), situated about 250 m from Iseltwald. As the name suggests, Lake Brienz lies on the southern edge of Brienz. To the east of Birenz lies the Grandhotel Giessbach, which is also almost on the lake, and can be seen from the lake.

Economy

Lake Brienz also offers many local people a good income. Since the lake is one of the cleanest lakes in Switzerland and therefore low in nutrients, fishing is very demanding. Fishing yields are around 10,000 kg per year, most of which is Egli. The fish are hardly exported and actually only offered regionally. Otherwise a big pillar of many locals is the passenger shipping. With a fleet of 5 ships, including a paddle wheel steamer called Lötschberg, BLS AG offers daily cruises. But those who would like to can rent the extraordinary ship of the Pfadigesselschaft Täggeliboch. This ship is mainly used for private purposes or for Scouting.

Exciting

There is a species of fish that only exists in the lakes of Thun and Brienz, named after the lake, Brienzlig. These are rather small fishes, which swim especially with stones and are also slightly grey.

Tips

Around Lake Brienz there are many beautiful paths for walking. A really good tip is a walk from Bönigen to Iseltwald along the lake. But there are also other beautiful places around the lake, such as Ringenberg. Ringenberg is also beautifully situated, the village centre is not directly on the lake, but the view is still beautiful. Our tip; go for a coffee after Bönigen Fahren and at the lake.
