World Snow Festival 2020

World Snow Festival 2020

This year the World Snow Festival took place in Grindelwald for the 38th time. With the motto “hospitality”, various artists from all over the world created sculptures from 3-metre high blocks of ice. Between 20 – 25 January the works could be admired on the village square called “Bärplatz”. The World Snow Festival is one of the most popular events in winter and has established itself in the annual program of many guests. Since the beginning it takes place every January and also always on the Bärplatz. Due to the renovations in the village, it also takes place on the Eiger+ Nordwandplatz.

History

The World Snow Festival has been held in Grindelwald every year since 1983. It started with a Japanese artist who created a giant heath from snow. Since then the festival has grown bigger and more international every year. In addition, a competition of the Swiss Ski Resort has been taking place for some years now. Different teams from Switzerland create during the festival week, for example on the Männlichen, different sculptures from snow.

Competition

Since the last years the World Snow Festival has developed into a competition. Every Friday after the week, the announcement of the rankings and the distribution of prizes takes place on the event site. The respective teams evaluate the mutual sculptures according to the following points: quality, skill and topicality. In addition, the spectators may also vote for the best snow sculpture. Afterwards there will be a mulled wine party and a colourful presentation of the sculptures on the festival area.

According to current information, next year’s World Snow Festival will take place from 18-23 January 2021.
