Grindelwald, The Village

Grindelwald, The Village

The village of Grindelwald lies at the foot of the Eiger at around 1,000 metres above sea level. The special village is especially famous for the surrounding mountains such as the Eiger, Wetterhorn and Mettenberg and of course also for the magnificent mountain scenery. With its 4,020 inhabitants, Grindelwald is one of the larger Alpine villages in Switzerland. With its backdrop and countless activities and vantage points, Grindelwald is one of the most sought-after and cosmopolitan holiday and excursion destinations in Switzerland.

History

From the 18th century onwards, the Eiger village attracted its first guests. It was mostly English people who felt attracted by the once advancing glacier and the beautiful panorama. From the middle of the 19th century onwards, the real breakthrough of tourism came with the first alpinism. Many local mountain guides climbed the peaks of the region with their guests. The construction of the first roads and railway lines at the end of the 19th century made it easier and easier for tourists. In 1908 the first cable car was built, the so-called “Wetterhorn lift”, which was unfortunately never completed due to economic reasons. In 1912 the first railway reached the Jungfraujoch via Kleine Scheidegg. Since then the Jungfraujoch has been the highest railway station in Europe and probably the most famous vantage point in Grindelwald.

Winter

With around 160 kilometres of slopes, the two ski areas First and Kleine Scheidegg – Männlichen – Wengen offer beautiful and spectacular runs. As an alternative, there is also the ski area Schilthorn, which is not far away. The Schilthorn is famous for the James Bond film shot there and for the restaurant on the summit at 2,971 metres above sea level. We can recommend you to visit the most famous ski run of the region, the Lauberhorn run near Wengen.

For all non-skiers, Grindelwald has an estimated 80 km of winter hiking trails and 60 km of toboggan runs. Among them is the only recommended longest sledge run in the Alps from the Faulhorn to the village.
Grindelwald also offers many other winter sports, just ask us when you visit Chalet Anemone.

Summer

In summer you can walk up to 300 km of hiking trails in Grindelwald. We recommend the hiking trail from the First along the Bachalpsee for a stopover at the Berghotel Faulhorn and on to the Schynigen Platte. This is one of the most beautiful tours in the region. Although it is a demanding hike, you will experience a fantastic view and nature.
